Karen Brown's 2000 Portugal: Charming Inns & Itineraries (Karen Brown's Portugal)
Published in Paperback by Fodors Travel Pubns (January, 1900)
Authors: Cynthia Sauvage, Clare Brown, Barbara Tapp, and Karen Brown
Average review score:

Indispensible for any traveler in Portugal
I used this book side-by-side with my Frommer's Portugal and found it to be a great complement. It excels at finding wonderful accommodations across the ENTIRE country. (My Frommer's book, I found, included only the most popular tourist spots, largely ignoring the Douro Valley, for example, which every traveler should see.) Each of the places we stayed was unique and spectacular, and many of them were not included in other travel guides. The regional itineraries were also very useful. While we didn't follow any of them to the letter but rather picked and choosed to suit our travel plans, the book pointed out lots of special points of interest, again not always mentioned in my Frommer's book. (Were it not for these itineraries, we undoubtedly would have missed seeing the medieval castle at Marvao, a highlight of our trip.)

For in-depth coverage of all of the regions of Portugal and lodging recommendations you can trust, this book is it.

This was my first time buying a Karen Brown guide, and it certainly won't be my last.

Karen Brown's 2000 Portugal: Charming Inns and Itineraries
After digesting several other books on Portugal I received Karen Brown's book. Had I received her book first, I could have saved a lot of money and time because no other book comes anywhere close to providing the information and interest in visiting the places that she writes about. I cannot wait to read her other books. Wanted to have a vehicle there but was disuaded by the other publications. However, after reading her book I am anxious to rent a vehicle and visit all the wonderful adventures that she has written about. Sorry to say we only have 16 days this time, but rest assured we will return to finish the books descriptions of all the wonderful places. The web sites and phone numbers provided are extremely helpful; even moreso that the information provided by the state run tourism office. The encouragement to explore is there. Thanks once again for a wonderfully written guide book.

The Key to Ultimate Health
Published in Unknown Binding by Advanced Health Research Publishing (01 September, 1998)
Authors: Ellen Hodgson Brown, Ellen H., JD Brown, and Richard T., DMD, FACAD Hansen
Average review score:

Reality Check
A well written, eye opener of a book! This book explains the basic dental procedures we've all endured with emphasis on how that dental work affects our health. The authors include a very interesting perspective of dental history, current procedures, solutions to previously performed faulty procedures, and even some well founded nutritional advice. This is a must read for anyone with chronically ill health or for anyone who desires to make well informed decisions regarding their health. I never would have thought a book on dentistry and health could ever be such a "page-turner"!

The Key to Ultimate Health
This book was a wonderful eye opener to the world of holistic dentistry. Dr. Hansen's techniques and data are so up to date that what I had been learning and reading from other book on the same topic were all outdated. This book has completley changed how I am having my dentistry, and how my family is having dentistry. My father is a dentist and after reading htis he is seriously re evaluating his practice. This book is even easy for the lay person to read and understand. It goes over mercury removal, detoxing, how the entire body and nutritional aspect play a role as well. I was even able to prevent a rool canal from being done. I would strongly advise that before any dental treatment people read this bookto at least know what there options are as a consumer. So many times we are in the dark as to whatother alternatives are out there. Not with this book.

The Killing of Monday Brown
Published in Audio Cassette by Brilliance Audio (July, 1994)
Author: Sandra West Prowell

Excellent Mind Ride!
Murder, mystery, suspense, lovable characters with lazer-fast wit and charm. Take the visual detail of Anne Perry, add the fun from Janet Evanovich, and the artfulness of Agatha Christie and you've got THE KILLING OF MONDAY BROWN. WARNING, keep your book out of range from those who might swipe your copy. It's great. And every now and again a chuckle leaks out from the wonderful snappy exchanges between certain characters.

PHOEBIE SIEGAL, PI, is out to find out who murdered MONDAY BROWN, a want-to-be Native American. She takes her investigation in and around the tense lives on and off the reservation with first-person perception, attitude, and humor.

Love this story. Just got BY EVIL MEANS and WHEN WALLFLOWERS DIE. Anyone know when Sandra West Prowell's LAP OF GOD will be released? Please e-mail me if you do. It says in back of book that it will be the first thriller.

One of the best mystery/suspense series around!
Phoebe Siegel is a wise-cracking, gutsy P. I. with a past. She's also one of the most well-crafted and fascinating heroines I've come across in a long time.

In The Killing of Monday Brown, Siegel is hired by a local native American family to locate Matthew Wolf, a family member who is on the run and accused of killing Monday Brown. Monday is a white man living among the Crow community, and has been robbing the graves of Indians, stealing valuable and sacred artifacts for sale in Europe. But Monday is nowhere to be found, and Matthew Wolf is hard to find.

Phoebe's search for the truth leads takes her on a journey deep into the Crow culture and straight into the path of danger. Prowell's vivid exploration of Crow culture makes an already wonderful novel even more fascinating. And it doesn't hurt one bit that, along the way, Phoebe's relationship with sexy police officer Kyle Old Wolf also heats up considerably.

Prowell's ability to write fast-paced, entertaining dialogue is comparable in style and quality to such talented writers as Sandra Scoppettone and Dana Stabenow. The Montana setting is rich in history, culture, and beauty - a truly superb backdrop for the series. And while Montana seems to be a current favorite of writers, Prowell truly brings this area to life in The Killing of Monday Brown, a reflection of her artistic talent as well as her heritage as a fourth-generation Montanan. It's abundantly clear that Prowell has given much thought, heart, and soul to her series' heroine as well as the plot that sustains The Killing of Monday Brown. Phoebe is a deliciously feisty breath of fresh air, and this complicated plot moves quickly and smoothly from its beginning to its highly suspenseful conclusion.

Whether or not you've read the first entry in the Phoebe Siegel series (By Evil Means) you'll find The Killing of Monday Brown a well-written, unique, and very entertaining novel. And if you're a fan of writers such as Dana Stabenow, Sandra Scoppettone, Abigail Padgett, or Janet Evanovich, do yourself a favor and give Phoebe Siegel a try. I'll bet you one beautiful Montana sunset that you won't be disappointed.

Knitting Techniques - Volume 1 (Harmony Guides)

Average review score:

I can knit
Bought this book before xmas. I couldn't fool my mom... but my peers are impressed with my first round of projects generated from what i learned in this book. I'm unconventional so I started with wristbands and a choker. I've already made them for friends. This is a great book for getting started even if you want to knit traditional garments.

Enlarged, clear pictures, clear definitions.
The pictures are enlarged, the views are easy to see and this book is packed with good information on common problems. Let's see if I can get the cables right, now??

The Landlord's Law Book

Excellent
I bought several landlord's rights books and found that this book was really helpful and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book if you're a landlord in need of legal advice to protect your property.

INDISPENSABLE!
This is a major component of my landlord/property manager library. I was not surprised to find, when I purchased this recent updated edition, that it is even better! (I noticed more excerpts of code.) Nolo Press has a deserved reputation for offering excellent legal guides for the lay person

The Lenient Beast
Published in Paperback by Carroll & Graf (December, 1988)
Author: Fredric Brown
Average review score:

An excellent mystery novel.
Fredric Brown's masterful mystery novel (which I read in one sitting) is a skillfully written tale featuring multiple first person perspectives. Fully developed characters and absoultely dead-on, realistic dialog kept me engaged throughout. Brown touches on a range of human issues such as interracial marriage, anti-semitism and alchoholism in a truthful manner and weaves this into a murder mystery laden with psychological torment, a la Jim Thompson. This is simply one of the best books I've read in a long time.

You've never read a detective novel quite like this one...
This novel of serial killings garners its strength from the bluntness and crispness of Brown's narrative; this is a detective novel with no moody lighting, no one-liners and no super cool hero. Each chapter presents a different view point, yet each latches onto the previous chapter to create a stifling tale of a week in a small town in the US south with a killer on the lose. This is the literary equivalent of Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth or Mystery Train - this is Pynchon rather than Spillane.

Liberation Theology: An Introductory Guide
Published in Paperback by Westminster John Knox Press (April, 1993)
Author: Robert McAfee Brown
Average review score:

Brown Imparts Life Into the Study of Liberation Theology
The author, Robert McAfee Brown, states that his goal for this book is to bear witness to the extraordinary faith of Latin American Catholics who participate in the Liberation movement (20). He has been, no doubt, successful in his objective. This text is intriguing more for its intent (a "call to action" for first-world readers) rather than for its main content (an introductory description of Liberation Theology-primarily in Latin America). The reader of this book will find many entreaties to action on behalf of the oppressed peoples of the world, many of whom reside in our "backyard"-the poor urban areas of North American cities (94). Brown does a commendable job of keeping the topic interesting through the consistent intermingling of real-life anecdotes with theological and historical descriptions. Perhaps the most impressive characteristic of this book is the fact that it reads more like a story than a theological text.

In most non-fiction books, there are some areas that stand out more than others. This book is no exception. The introduction, for example, carries several stories of actual people who have suffered horrible atrocities in some areas of Central America. These real-life stories help the reader to understand the type of political, economic, and social oppression that a majority of Latin American people must deal with daily. Accordingly, it becomes more realistic for the reader to understand what a powerful "liberator" the Liberation movement has become for the lay Catholic in many parts of Latin America. The base church communities that have evolved to support the critical needs of the oppressed are much more than a reflection of a "professional" theological movement as we might, at first, guess. On the contrary, the roles are reversed. It is these base communities, providing for the needs of people, through which Liberation Theology-the subject-has evolved. So then, Liberation Theology as an academic field, is a mere reflection of how oppressed Christians respond-epistemologically and ecclesiologically-to the institutionalized oppression with which they must deal. Brown notes that "It is not enough to read books about poverty; commitment means encountering poor people" (56). Liberation Theology, therefore, can only be truly understood and practiced through and with the lives of oppressed peoples.

Again, the real value of this book comes in Brown's consistent appeals to his readers for action in support of oppressed people groups. In fact, he even lists steps that we might take to truly "practice" Liberation Theology even while in the midst of our comfortable, first-world environment (116-120). If the reader is interested, the author's Endnotes and Section on Discussion Questions are both helpful and useful for further research.

Superb writing!
Brown does an excellent job of portraying lib. theology for the "first world" reader. The book is fascinating. Reading it has had a deep impact on my life.
